In conjunction with the Genre Gallery exhibition, String Theory: String-Pieced Quilts from Past to Present, the NEQM is proud to welcome award-winning quilt artist and instructor, Marge Tucker. In her presentation, Tucker shares her journey as a quiltmaker, which began more than 25 years ago.

“At that time, I didn’t know that quilting would become my passion and now my profession. I feel so fortunate to be able to share and continue the tradition of quilting with my students. I started with traditional pieced quilts but am now focused on abstract improvisational design in my work.”

Tucker highlights her antique quilts included in the exhibition and discusses how her collection has inspired the contemporary quilts for which she has received several prestigious awards. 

“When I switched from traditional quilting to working more improvisational, I started to look for older quilts that were unique and made without using a known quilt block or not following the “rules” of a traditional quilt block. These quilts were so fascinating and led to my growing collection of antique and vintage quilts. I am excited to have several of my antique quilts as well as two quilts I made that are directly inspired by antique quilts in this very special exhibition.”
